Made for a course assignment where each student had to come up with a “Grille” concept. The choice was made to come up with a room divider. This idea was derived from Japanese interiors - specifically the 5m long screens used as wardrobe accessories and display pieces. An entirely steel divider that looked like curtains in civic buildings and theatres, tall and wide enough for a person behind it not to be seen. Blending the aesthetics of soft textile with a hard durable material such as steel allowed to achieve a degree of surreal appearance questioning reality and our perception of matter.
The press brake machine was used to form symmetrical folds which later matched in the center horizontal line behaving as the metal was pinched in the middle. Thanks to that, a sense of dynamics and tension is captured within the piece, contributing to its title - a doubtful period in human history.
